Embedding financial transparency and cost control across a complex cloud platform

1 and One partnered with an Australian Government department to design and embed a financial operations (FinOps) capability across a large-scale cloud data environment. The engagement focused on improving cost visibility, strengthening financial governance, and enabling more informed decision-making across a complex, multi-domain platform.

Our approach

We delivered a structured, phased approach to establish and operationalise FinOps within the client’s environment, ensuring alignment to both technical architecture and financial management practices. Key elements of our approach included:

Service tier definition
  • defining service tiers to support consistent cost attribution across cloud components

Cost allocation transparency
  • establishing cost allocation models to enable transparent reporting and accountability

Forward budget alignment
  • developing forward budget estimates aligned to platform usage and growth

Streamlined FinOps Cycle
  • implementing a repeatable FinOps cycle for cost estimation, monitoring, and optimisation

Real-time cost insights
  • designing and deploying a Power BI dashboard to provide real-time insights into cost drivers and consumption patterns

Cost attribution model
  • delivering a showback model to demonstrate internal cost attribution and support behavioural change
